We had this company do a large concrete walkway and carport job for us in 2004. They did not do all the work they were contracted to do and what they did do has caused us problems.
The minor things were
1. a weak spot in the patio that dropped when they stamped the concrete creating a walking hazard.
2. The coloured areas weren't sealed properly and what colour there started to wear off after only 1 year.
The bigger issues:
1. They were supposed to use concrete that was coloured before it was poured, but instead they applied colour to the surface which didn't take properly, leaving several areas concrete coloured.
2. They were supposed to create two 2' x 2' concrete supports for a carport's outer walls. Moe said they were there, but since they were covered by the carport floor, I couldn't tell if the supports were actually there. In 2008 when we had the carport built the new contractor drilled in several places where the supports should have been but couldn't find them. He ended up cutting out two 2' x 2' pieces of the carport floor and pouring the foundation supports himself.
3. They poured the concrete so it was flush with the top of 2 basement window well retaining walls. When it rains heavily, water runs into the window wells. At the moment we have about 1 1/2 inches of water in our basement due to today's rain and an ice dam the rain created about a foot out from the retaining wall.
The company never replied to any of me emails or phone calls. When they did the work, there was no listing for them on the Ottawa BBB web site. Now there is.
Their BBB rating is F.

I had M&M Concrete (Morandi - Moe Rino) doing a similar job at my place.
ReplyDeleteI experienced the same minor issues and the major issue was exactly like yours as the color was not pre-mix. 6 months later the color was fading and the concrete started flacking. After numerous unsuccessful attempts to reach the company and Moe, I took the case to court and won.
Unfortunately, the company was showing no assets neither Moe Morandi Rino!
It was a simple project that turned nasty and left a negative impression in my neighbord as well.
I found a temporary fix for the color/flacking issue : Rust-O-Leum Concrete stain... which so far is lasting longer than expected and looking good.

ReplyDeleteI had a patio done by Moe in the Spring of 2012 and the colour and the finish were not good and mid summer, it cracked in two (on a slight slope). He has accepted responsibility and agreed to remove and re-install the patio in e-mails from him. It is now January of 2013 and nothing has yet been scheduled by Moe. Did either one of you have any luck in the end?
Had Moe do a front walkway and planter. Everything looked great the first year. Second year, the parging on the planter started cracking and breaking off. Numerous attempts to reach Moe went unanswered.

ReplyDeleteI didn't give up and Moe has removed the broken patio and redone a new one. So far so good. There seem to be much more attention to detail. I heard that he was giving up commercial to concentrate on residential so one of the first things he should do is make things right with both of you. He should then register with BBB and improve his credit rating.
ReplyDeleteI had to go way out of the norm to get his attention and I finally got it. It is unacceptable to have to work that hard to get decent service. In the end, he was apologetic and did a very good job.

Moe Rino is a scam artist. I had huge issues with a job he did for us. Front walkway cracking and front step sinking. I tried on multiple occasions to contact him but for the most part he never returned my calls. When I did get in touch with him he would promised to do something for me and then never show up. I took him to court and was awarded $5000 in damages but was never able to collect. I am now having the front walkway re-done by a reputable contractor. Once the concrete was removed I could see that Moe's company had poured the concrete on less than 2 inches of stone dust and the step was poured directly on the underlying dirt.

This is a public warning to all parents of a CHILD PREDATOR and skilled manipulator living among us, depicting himself as a trustworthy family man. Moe Rino thought he could beat the system by taking a plea deal so there would be no official record of his sentence hearing for molesting his youngest daughter Brianna ( his lawyer Bruce Engel negotiated a plea deal ) . In 2020 Moe Rino of SMB Concrete Inc.
was charged for sexually abusing his youngest daughter Brianna. He did this to her from ages 14 to 18. During this time Moe introduced Brianna to cocaine. He used it as a tool for submission to fulfill his disgusting perversions. His wife Lisa Rino begged Brianna to agree to a plea deal to avoid a lengthy criminal trial which would publicly destroy the Rinos. Brianna took pity on her mother and reluctantly agreed.., but changed her last name from Rino to Frangione ( out of disgust for her father ). She then disconnected herself from the Rino family completely. You can verify all this through the court room footage attached as well as Google.
Mr. Rino's conviction came in 2022. Attached in this video recording, Brianna reads her victim impact statement in court and Moe pleads guilty. Mr. Rino agreed to 18 months probation along with psychiatric treatment and counseling for substance abuse.
Brianna makes it clear she knows exactly what coming forward has cost her, but she also explains the purpose behind her cause is far greater. She's doing this to protect possible future victims.
